The Name

The history of Lycabettus is lost in ancient times and mythology. As it is said, it fell from the hands of the goddess Athena, while she was holding it in order to place it on the Acropolis. The reason the rock fell from the goddess’s hands, was the news brought by a raven, that the daughters of Erechteos opened the basket where the sacred snake Erichthonios was held…

The name of the hill has its own explanation since a lot of people associate it with the twilight (lycofos). However, several historians attribute the word to the breast shape of the hill and the Pelasgian word Loukampetou. Others believe that the name of the hill derives from the word wolf because wolf packs were inhabiting the hill for many years.
